The Perks of Using Custom Moulded Plastics in Fire Safety Products

07 February 2023

Buildings require components that could keep their whole structure long-lasting and safe. And one of the components they often incorporate is fire safety products.

Fire safety products must be present in buildings since they protect their rooms and spaces from getting damaged and destroyed by fire. Fire, as we all know, can consume everything on its path. As it interacts with various elements, it can emit smoke and particulates that can deter one’s body system from working optimally. Fire can also increase the temperature of the surroundings, making it more difficult for trapped building occupants to survive.

Many materials can be used in producing fire safety products. But one of the most utilised materials in producing these products is custom moulded plastics.

A Quick Overview of Custom Moulded Plastics

Custom moulded plastics come from the manufacturing process known as plastic injection moulding. It is a manufacturing process wherein small plastic granules are heated up to a liquid state and then injected into the cavity of a mould. The injected small plastic granules will subsequently form parts and products required by the industries.

Before producing custom moulded plastics, manufacturers have to create the mould into which the plastic granules will be injected. Once done, they now have to carry out clamping, which involves pushing two metal plates of the mould against each other in a machine press. Afterwards, the manufacturer can inject the melted plastic inside the clamped mould plates. The melted plastic will subsequently fill the mould, while pressure will be applied to the mould.

The melted plastic inside the mould must then be left alone so that it will cool and solidify. The mould plates can then be opened with a clamping motor once the part has cooled. Ultimately, an ejector bar can be used to slowly push the solidified product out of the mould. Cutters can be used to get rid of any waste material. The excess material can be recycled.

Add Compounds to Custom Moulded Plastics

Plastics in general are combustible. Hence, they are expected to burn, ignite, support combustion, and even release flammable vapours in the air. However, they can be utilised for fire safety products once their properties have been altered and modified.

Once compounds like hydrated magnesium oxide, aluminium oxide, phosphorus, or bromine are added to plastic materials, manufacturers can yield plastic elements that are fire-resistant, flame-retardant, non-flammable, or self-extinguishing.

Custom Moulded Plastics for Fire Safety Uses

Of course, utilising custom mould plastics in fire safety products can help resist ignition. Fire safety products serve as the first defence in case of a fire. If they can resist ignition for a long time, they can easily prevent buildings from burning down completely. Another perk of using custom moulded plastics in these products is they can slow down the flame spread. Flame can travel easily from one place to another. But with these types of fire safety products, the young flame will be hindered from reaching other property areas, minimising potential damage.

Ultimately, maximising custom moulded plastics in fire safety products can reduce smoke and fume generation. These elements can often reduce the visibility of the surroundings, which makes fire safety and rescue activities more difficult and dangerous. Since these products can reduce the generation of the elements, many lives can be saved.
